November 4-7, Travel Day 24

Thanks for all of the comments!  I really appreciate the comments and will keep them private!

Hello friends!   We left Tensaw River anchorage November 4 and headed to Fairhope Alabama.  Tensaw was a beautiful, lake like anchorage.  We shared it with 6 or 7 other boats. I did not paddle board over to meet them as we had seen 2 alligators the day before.  It took 6 hours and 11 minutes to get to Fairhope.  We went through downtown Mobile and crossed the Mobile bay.  The water was choppy in the bay with 2 foot waves…like riding a rough horse!

We stayed 2 nights in Fairhope Alabama.  It is a charming sea side town, in fact it was included in Travel Pulse magazine as one of “Americas 30 most charming seaside towns.”  We arrived in time for the First Friday Art Walk in the down town area.  A southern gospel choir was singing  ” I’ll fly away old glory” and you couldn’t help singing along.  The art center was fantastic and well attended.  The downtown area is about 6 blocks long and full of shops, restaurants, museums and art galleries.  The streets and buildings were beautifully landscaped.  Fairhope is known for inspiring creativity, some famous individuals who grew up there include Jimmy Buffett, Fannie Flag (Fried Green Tomatoes), and Winston Groom who wrote Forest Gump.  It was a great resort town on the bay and would be a good destination for any family vacation.

Mike talked to the owner of this beautiful stone house and got the history.  It was a great design with a dragon on top of the roof and no straight lines..he loved it.

Out to dinner in Fairhope with Wade and Kathleen who  were from Spokane, WA. and traveling with their dog Maggie on their cruiser “Irish Lass” , and Dave and Julia Springer traveling on their 40 foot Main ship “Baker Street Blue”.  Julia is a retired veterinarian pathologist and Dave was looking at houses in Fairhope! (That’s how nice Fairhope was!)

We went along  the east shore of Mobile Bay to Intercostal waterway…to Lulu’s!

Dinner at Lulu’s with Kathleen and Wade from “Irish Lass”, Jim from “Jolly Green” and me and Mike from ‘No Agenda”!  Jim named his boat after the Sikorsky HH-3E helicopter which he flew during the Vietnam war.  The helicopter was nicknamed Jolly Green Giant.

“I love this bar, its my kind of place…..”  Lulu’s is owned by Jimmy Buffett’s sister, she learned to cook early on with her grandmother and got a big break when Jimmy called her to see if she could cook for Harrison Ford on his motor yacht, Mariner III, while he was shooting Mosquito Coast in Belize!  Interesting article about her on the Atlantic web site.

We left Lulus’s this morning, our friend Kathleen shouted goodbye to us from her boat!  We were planning a day in Pensecola to tour The National Naval Aviation Museum but it is only open to military members or vets at this time due to the terrorist attack that occurred on December 6, 2019.  Mike was looking forward to the museum.  The Blue Angels will be practicing tomorrow so hopefully we get to see them!  We are going to anchor at Spectre Island tonight and will get to Destin tomorrow with plans to meet up with Carl and Lesa Klein.

Pictured to the left is the Wharf Marina in Orange Beach.

Tonight we are anchored in this beautiful area behind a tiny uninhabited island in-between Spectre island and this small island.  We took the dinghy to shore and explored…no treasure!  There is an Air Force base near by and we have had an air show, even an Osprey.!  Mike is grilling burgers for dinner and soon it will be loopers midnight and time to call it a day!
