April 16, 2023, Travel Day 75, Washington D.C.

We traveled 24.8 nautical miles, 3 hours and 58 minutes to Capital Yacht Club, Washington, D.C.  We arrived late in the morning and had enough time to take the Metro and City Bus to the Annex of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum at Dulles Airport.  Everyone was helpful and we did manage to actually get there and back to the boat!  No small task!

We did a 2 hour Segway tour of DC, it was so much fun!  Fortunately we did not run over anyone!

We just missed the cherry blossoms!  We were able to see the Washington Monument, National Mall, World War II Memorial, Vietnam War Memorial, Korean War Memorial, U.S. Capitol, The White House, Lincoln Memorial, Thomas Jefferson Memorial, Smithsonian and much more!

Capital Yacht Club was a fabulous marina!  We met Jodie, below, she had a Mainship like ours and is planning on looping in the summer with her father.  Jodie retired from the Coast Guard and is now writing children books.  Her boat is pictured below complete with her floating swimming pool!!

Pictured below:

The boat below belongs to Senator Joe Manchin, West Virginia.  We were fortunate enough to actually meet Senator Manchin.  He was very warm, kind and gracious.  He arranged for us to have a private tour of the Capitol with his aide, Anna.  It was the highlight of our trip to D.C.

One of the windows broken during the January 6 riots.

Anna, Senator Manchin’s Aide, took us on a private tour of the Capitol.!

The Hope Diamond

We visited the Holocaust Museum. It was extremely sobering and heartbreaking.

The whole experience of traveling to the places where our history as a nation began has only reinforced the fragility of our democracy.

We visited the World War II Memorial.  Mike’s dad, Clarence, was able to go on a Honor Flight to the memorial a few years before he died.  It was such a tremendous honor to celebrate with Clarence at the time, and to know that our Veterans are appreciated for their service, sacrifice and selflessness.  My dad was also a World War II veteran.

Below: Old Ebbitt Grill: This is one of the oldest restraraunts in D.C.  It was Teddy Rooselvelt’s favorite and is full of his taxidermy!  We had lunch there after our Segway tour.
