June 27, Travel Day 113, Trenton, Ontario

We traveled 29.9 NM or 4 hours and 40 minutes form our anchorage on Lake Ontario ( Bay of Quintee),  to reach Trent Port Marina.  Trenton was a great marina!  It had a very modern boaters lounge and great private shower facilities.  It was close to town and provisions.  This is the last town before starting the Trent Severn Waterway.  The Trent Severn Waterway is a 240 mile canal route connecting Lake Ontario at Trenton to Georgian Bay, Lake Huron at Port Severn.  The natural waterways on this route include the Trent River, Otonabee River and several lakes.  It is supposed to be the most scenic, meandering interconnected systems of navigation in the world!  It was constructed in 1833 and has 44 locks and 16 swing bridges. One of the locks is called the Big Chute which is actually a Marine Railway..I guess we will find out in about 10 days!

Below: No Agenda at the end of the rainbow in Bay of Quintee!

The town had lots of greenspace and bike trails along the Trent River, Mike and I did some biking.

The National Air Force Museum of Canada is located in Trenton.  This museum is dedicated to preserving the history of the Royal Canadian Air Force.  It is located on the largest Air Force Base in Canada and also had a 15 acre RCAF memorial airpark with 22 historic aircraft on display outside.  The most important aircraft in the collection is the Halifax below, it was found frozen in a lake in Norway after WWII and meticulously restored to near perfect condition.  This is one of only 3 surviving Halifax bombers from WWII of the 6,178 that were build.  There was also a display of the German POW camp Stalag Left III.  It showed the design, tunneling and the hardships the British Commonwealth prisoners of war endured in “The Great Escape”.

The universal laws of attraction were in full force!  Mike met these 2 gentleman who were part of the restoration team.  They gave him a private tour of their current projects and took him around the museum to point out many engineering marvels!  Mike was in heaven!

We stayed 2 nights in Trenton, one evening we all grilled and enjoyed the boaters lounge.  One night we went out for dinner and some great Italian food.
