August 15, Travel Day 142, Elmwood Township

We traveled 5 hours and 01 minute or 37.5 NM from Charlevoix to Elmwood Township Marina. We traveled down the Grand Traverse Bay, west of the Old Mission Point Lighthouse.  We traveled on a Tuesday, the weather was a little overcast and cloudy and the waves were 2 foot.  The forecast for Wednesday and Thursday was for 35 mph winds with 13 foot waves!!!! Needless to say we needed to hunker down till this weather system passed!  Fortunately for us our friends Lesa and Carl Klein, Tony and Mary Grass were vacationing nearby in Traverse City!!  We had a great time visiting with them and touring the Old Mission Peninsula with it’s beautiful wineries and plentiful breweries!  We also spent time with them touring the Sleeping Bear Dunes and Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive.  It was also a lot of fun “rating” our brews from 1-5 on the brewery tour!  They brought lots of good energy and we really had a good time!

It is very difficult to hike on the Dunes trail!  It is all sand and very steep, there is a warning sign at the top of the dunes letting individuals know that it is a $3000.00 fee for those who need rescuing from the bottom of the dunes!!  We were content to “just look”!

Our friends Deb and Bill sent us the picture of the kite surfers from Leland.  The waves and winds were too fierce for boating!

We had a wonderful unexpected visit from Robin and John, fellow loopers who we had met in Chattanooga!  They completed their loop and live in this area!  It was fun visiting them and talking about our shared adventure!
