Travel Day 90 Back to Croton! May 21

We traveled 4 hours and 39 minutes from Liberty Landing marina to Halfmoon Bay Marina.  Zach and Nora’s plane left early on Monday morning and Mary Lou’s plane arrived Sunday afternoon!  We revisited the Croton Gorge and Dam, Blue Pig Ice Cream, FDR’s library and home and the Rhinebeck Aereodrome!

Above right: Nora Jo and her American Girl Doll “Camille”!  Nora told me that she and Camille are “Boat Girls”!!

We thoroughly enjoyed the Franklin Roosevelt Presidential library and Museum.  This is America’s first presidential library.  FDR donated his papers to the Library and FDR established the precedent for public ownership of presidential papers.  His library became the model for the nation’s presidential library system, now part of the National Archive’s.  Visitors can explore exhibits about the lives of the Roosevelts, the Great Depression, The New Deal and World War II.

“The dedication of a library is in itself and act of faith.. A nation must believe in the capacity of its own people to learn from the past that they can gain in judgement in creating their own future.”  Franklin D Roosevelt, June 30, 1941.   May we listen to this wise man!!!

FDR was quite an athlete before he contracted polio.  He and Eleanor both loved horses!

Eleanor was really impressive, she was a reformer, teacher, journalist, political activist  and advocate for the underprivileged.  She was a delegate to the United Nations and champion for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  After Franklin died she generously gave their home and estate to the people to be used as his library.  She was truly inspiring!

We were just an hour from the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome!  This place was on Mike’s bucket list!  It is America’s first flying museum of antique aircraft!  Every Saturday during the summer months they have an air show where you can experience the magic and myth of flight with World War I era dog fights!  The museum was incredible !  Mike got a new sweatshirt!!
