April 13, Travel Day 72, Somers Cove Marina, Crisfield

We left beautiful Yorktown early on the 13th and traveled across the Chesapeake Bay to Crisfield, Ma.  This was a long journey, 8 hours and 36 minutes.  Crisfield is a small fishing community with several water front restaurants and several marinas.  We stayed at Somers Cove.  The marina is really nice and the people were exceptionally nice, even gave us each a piece of famous “Smith Island Cake”.  You can order one of these cakes on line for about $80.00!  We used the time to do laundry, ride bikes around the town and do chores.

The cakes are 12 thin layers with lots of icing in-between.  The ladies of Smith Island would make these cakes to send with their spouses who would go to sea fishing for days on end.  The thin layers and heavy icing kept the cakes fresh.
