July 6-12 Travel Days 118-121

We traveled a whirlwind tour of the Trent Severn Waterway!  From Peterborough we went to Nassau Mills, Otanabee, Douro, Sawer Creek, Lakefield, Young Point. Burleigh Falls, Lovesick Island, Buckhorn, Bobcaygeon, Lindsay, Fenelon Falls. Rosedale, Kirkfield, Bolsover and Talbot.  We went through antother Lift Lock in Kirkfield, this was the highest point in the waterway.  The Lock failed in 2022 and construction crew are still working to restore full operation.  One chamber of the lift was working and we were able to get through.

We had hoped to stay overnight on Lovesick Island, Lock 30,but there was no space on the dock wall.  The lock park was one of those picturesque places and is only available to get to by boat.  With a name like Lovesick, I assumed there was a good story.  The legend  involved a local Aisnaabe man and an Irish settler, the stars were crossed against them and prejudice and circumstance kept them apart.  Devastated, the young man cast himself away on the lake’s many islands, determined to die without his love.  His near lifeless body was found by a fishing party and he was saved making the point that “Love never dies”.

We stayed at Hamlet of Buckhorn which was a very busy lock.  There was an outdoor restaurant with live music and lots of activity.  I spotted this guy locking through with a chucklesome t shirt.
