March 11-16, Savannah

We left Jeckyll Island on Saturday March 11, 2023, and our destination was Savannah, Georgia.  We spent one night at anchor before arriving at Thunderbolt Marina.  It was extremely windy and a storm was approaching so we were glad to get blown into our slip!  Along the way we did pass some small islands with homes,  only accessible by boat.  Savannah is a must see stop on the Great Loop.  It is a beautiful city steeped with history, art, boutiques, monuments not to mention 22 town squares!  We did the Trolley tour to get an overall view of Savannah and then enjoyed some time doing our own “Savannah Bucket List”.

Below: Chris and Laura from “Miracle”.

It was fun spending a day touring Savannah with them.  We stopped at the Wormsloe State Historic Site.  To get there you drive down a stunning mile-plus corridor of live oaks.  The site is the tabby ruins of the estate of Noble Wimberly Jones.  He was a key figure in Savannah’s founding, layout and he also was a physician.

Savannah has loads of beautiful neighborhoods, all with a central square or small park.  It is absolutely beautiful.  Many of the historic homes are open for touring. We did tour the Mercer Williams House.  This beautiful mansion was the home of James Arthur Williams (12/1/30-1/14/90).  He was an antiques dealer and historic preservationist and he played  an active role in the preservation of the Savannah Historic District.  He is also the main character in the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, which was published four years after his death in 1990 .  The book became a New York Times Best-Seller for 216 weeks.   The book was adapted for Clint Eastwood’s 1997 film with the same name.

We watched the movie before going into historic Savannah and I must say it really made Savannah’s history come to life!

The books plot is based on real-life events that occurred in the 1980’s.  After four trials for an alleged murder that occurred in his house in 1981, he was acquitted in 1989.  Juicy stuff!!

Below: Forsyth Park and Fountain

The Forsyth Fountain is the. most photographed spot in Savannah.  At the time of our visit the water was dyed green for St. Patrick’s Day.

We. were tempted to dock at the free docks seen below for our stay in Savannah.  We wondered why no one took advantage of this great cost saving opportunity!  Well, the tanker on the right might be why!  Savannah is a large port, ships go in and out of the river to the Atlantic and leave a huge wake that would bounce poor No Agenda around like a cork!    The riverfront was beautiful, lots of shops, restaurants and parks.  Below. is a statue of “The Waving Girl”.  This is a tribute to a woman named Florence Martus who greeted ships entering Savannah by waving a cloth.  She was in search of her long lost lover.  Her fame spread and ships would return her greetings with a blast from the ship’s horn.  Many still sound a salute to her statue.

A trip to Savannah would not be complete without real southern style food!  We did eat at Paula Deen’s one afternoon, yummy!  Other places we enjoyed in Savannah included The Pirates’ House, Tubby’s Tank House and Leopold’s Ice Cream.

While in Savannah it was our friend Laura’s dream to attend a Savannah Banana ball game!  While we were walking around Wormsloe historic area Laura’s husband Chris started talking to a guy in a Buckee’s tee shirt….They were going to the game and knew how to get tickets and the next thing you know we are at the game.  This is not your grandpa’s baseball!  It is more like Harlem Globetrotters only baseball.  It is a fun, circus like atmosphere geared at family entertainment.  They even have the Banana Nanas, a senior citizen dance team and the  Man- Nana’s, which is a DAD BOD cheerleading squad!  It was great fun.  We had stadium seating which included all you could eat and drink.  We are pictured below with fellow boaters, Chris, Laura, Jennifer and Vince!  GO BANANAS!!  Look it up, I think you will enjoy it.

Next stop Charleston, SC

We anchored out last night after leaving Savannah and will arrive later today.
