March 23, Travel Day 61 Southport, NC

We stopped in Southport, NC for a few days.  The town overlooks the Cape Fear River as it flows to the Atlantic Ocean.  The town was established in 1792 but French and Spanish explorers visited the area in 1524.  The British came and settled the area in the mid 1600’s.  Fort Johnson was established as a British Fort in 1745.  Lots of history from colonization, revolution, civil war to current times.  The town was easy to navigate on our bikes and we did a self guided tour of historic points of interest, such as the Garrison at Fort Johnson, Franklin Square, Franklin Art Gallery, Old Cemetery, Brunswick Inn and many more.  One of the old homes had a dramatic history, Mr. Stevens built a 3 story house on the corner of Brown and Potts Street for his bride to be.  The engagement ended when she said “No”, and married his best friend.  The newly married couple built a house across the street!  Mr. Stevens never married!!

Robert met us at the docks and invited us for wine on his porch one evening while we were in Southport.  Laura and Chris also joined us.  The Creech’s give so much of their time to welcome loopers and ensure their visit to Southport is enjoyable!  Robert is a wealth of knowledge regarding navigation and local history.

Top left: I met the woman pictured above while touring Franklin Park.  She was in charge of  “Beautification” of the town!  She was such a delight and so welcoming!  The town certainly had beauty and charm with live oaks and azalea blooming.

We enjoyed several waterfront restaurants !
